I had the pleasure of doing this family session at Palmer Park for one of my good friends and her family. I love every session I do as a Colorado Springs family photographer, but it’s always extra special when it’s for someone I already know personally. The location (a beautiful rocky area in Palmer Park) was her idea, and it was inspired! The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and the sunset took it over the top. Palmer Park is not on my list of the 5 best outdoor photography locations in Colorado Springs…but after this session I might have to add it!
I think one of the things I loved most about this location was how the rocks really make the subject stand out from the backdrop. I always tell clients to take the background into consideration when choosing their outfits. Working with the setting always results in prettier pictures and a better experience!
This family’s clothing choices were perfect for the setting. Even though they chose earthy tones, the solid colors and deep shades provided enough of a contrast to the rocks and trees to make them stand out without being distracting.
(With the seasons changing rapidly here—can’t believe it’s already fall—you might want to check out my tips for how to dress for family photos in winter if you’re planning a photo session in the next few months.)
Since this family counts a toddler among their blessings, I was prepared to bring out my bag of tricks. You just never know how a session with toddlers will go! And while I have some tips and tricks that generally get a smile, there are no guarantees, and I’ve learned to go with the flow and just see what happens. However, little man did so great and gave me some amazing expressions throughout our family session at Palmer Park. I was so pleased, and I know his parents were too!
Looking for a Colorado Springs family photographer? I would be delighted to capture your family’s special moments! Fall is an absolutely stunning time of year for family photos (and I still have just a couple of spots left for my fall family minis in early October!) Whatever your portrait needs, I hope you’ll reach out soon!
