As a Colorado Springs lifestyle newborn photographer, I love capturing the magic of those first days in the comfort of your own home. If this is a new experience for you, just know that you’re going to love it! In-home newborn photography is a little different than the studio, so if you have questions, here are my top tips for preparing for your newborn photoshoot.

What to Wear
Neutrals – Neutral colors tend to be flattering for everyone and will help to keep your images balanced. White, cream, and beige are always lovely, but navy blues, olive greens, or soft pinks and grays also work well as neutrals.
Be comfortable – One of the best parts about having a newborn photo session at home is how comfortable it is! There’s no need to dress up too much. After all, we want your session to feel relaxed and natural. Sweaters, blouses, simple dresses and jeans or khakis are all great choices.
Keep it simple – In the same vein, you don’t need to overthink what baby is going to wear either. Your little one can wear a favorite outfit or just a diaper. We can always utilize my swaddles and accessories if you need something for baby to wear.

How to Prepare
Stick to your normal routine – There’s no need to adjust baby’s feeding schedule. Just stick to your usual schedule. This helps to keep baby (and everyone else!) as relaxed as possible. As a lifestyle newborn photographer I always factor in some extra time for things like feeding or diaper changes, so we can take a break whenever needed.
Quick tidy of the photo areas – If we’re doing the session in your home, please don’t worry about deep cleaning. Your house doesn’t need to be pristine—as long as the main photo areas (often spots like the nursery, master bedroom, and maybe a corner of the living room) are tidy you’re all set!

Enjoy the Experience
Finally, remember to enjoy the experience! In-home newborn photography is meant to be comfortable, relaxed, and baby-led. We’ll take breaks whenever needed, so there’s no need to stress. And if baby is awake, or something doesn’t go exactly according to plan, that’s perfectly okay. Sometimes the sweetest photos happen that way!
