My 5 Favorite Prompts for Family Sessions with Little Kids

Getting fun and natural family photoshoot poses is one of the keys for an experience everyone will love–and pictures you’ll treasure forever! The perfect family session photo prompts are especially important when there are little ones involved. They may not be thrilled about posing for the camera in a more traditional way, but when we have fun with it we always get great shots! Here are my 5 favorite prompts for family sessions with little kids:

1. Kneeling

This is one of my favorites because it brings everyone’s faces to the same level. It’s also easy to sneak in some tickles or something silly to get those genuine laughs—and a kneeling pose is flattering for everyone. So be prepared: I may ask you to kneel, even in the snow! Trust me, it will be worth it.

2. Superman

That’s what I call it, anyway! It’s nearly impossible to do this without getting big smiles from everyone. Kids love it, parents love it, and these shots almost always end up being family favorites.

3. Walking

It might feel a little funny, but going for a stroll is one of the best ways to capture natural, candid images. I’ll snag a variety of shots, both wide and zoomed-in for those sweet closeups of the kids.

4. Piggyback and Shoulder Rides

If your kiddos are up for it, this is gold. Piggyback rides are playful, connected, and perfect for capturing personality. This is one of the tricks I pull out if a toddler is on the brink of a meltdown…up onto the shoulders they go!

5. Spinning and Swaying

This one is so fun, especially for little girls excited about their dresses! However, I’ll pull this one out even for photos of mom or dad holding their kids. “Do a spin, and end up back to facing me!” It works like a charm.

As you can see, most of my 5 favorite prompts for family sessions with little kids rely on movement. It really is the best way to get natural-looking photos! Try it next time you’re taking a few snapshots and you’ll see what I mean! And if you’re looking for a family photographer in Colorado that can capture your story in a way that’s perfect for every member of the family—from the babies to the grownups–I hope you’ll be in touch. I would love to help tell your story!
