It’s that time of year, my friends! I’m so excited for my fall family minis (happening at Bear Creek Regional Park this year and in Woodland Park). As the leaves start to turn golden, I also get excited to pull out my sweaters and get extra cozy. So, in the autumn spirit, I thought I would share my favorite tips for how to dress for fall family photos.
I’ve put together a few mood boards below to spark ideas, but you can also explore family sessions on my blog for more fall family photo outfit inspiration!
When dressing for your fall family photo session, you want to remember a few key points:
Dress in Warm, Neutral Colors
What does this mean? Fall colors naturally gravitate towards the warm, earth-toned side of things. Find colors in various shades of tan or off white, and mix in some muted pinks, greens, blues, or even some black.
Keep it Casual
As you’re trying to decide what to wear for fall family photos, I recommend aiming for an elevated but casual look. Dresses are lovely, but for women who don’t love wearing them, slacks or khakis also work great. And of course, nice jeans are great to add to the mix, for either adults or children.
Shoes Matter
Shoe choices can greatly impact the feel of your photos. Wear shoes that work well with your outfit and avoid sneakers. (Although kids can usually get away with neutral tennis shoes.)
Think About Textures
One of my favorite pieces of advice for family photo outfit ideas is to find clothing that has some texture, like a ribbed cardigan or a cable-knit sweater. Textures can add lots of depth and interest to your photos, even if you’re wearing all solid colors.
Have Fun with Accessories!
Don’t be afraid to accessorize with hats, jewelry, beanies for the kids, etc. Thoughtful accessories can take a basic outfit to the next level, and they’re also where you can really let your personalities shine!
Now that you know how to dress for fall family photos, let’s take advantage of the gorgeous autumn weather and book your session! I can’t wait!
