I am absolutely in love with all the beautiful autumn colors. Not least because they make the best backdrop for fall family photos!
This family knew they wanted some family photos with aspen trees, and I knew the perfect spot to suggest: Rainbow Gulch is a trail near Rampart Reservoir in Woodland Park, and it is absolutely stunning in the fall. The evergreen foliage of the pine trees plus that joyous yellow of the golden aspens makes for the prettiest backdrop.
In fact, I loved this location and season so much that I even plan on doing my 2025 fall family mini sessions here. Be sure to subscribe to my email list if you haven’t already, so you can be the first to know when I open up dates!
Since there are so many trees and hills at this location, the lighting is best a couple of hours before sunset. Usually I book my sessions for about an hour before sunset, but here, a little earlier is better. We still wanted that golden glow, but we had to make sure we had enough light to make it through the session!
We had so much fun walking the trail together, just laughing and playing. Mom had mentioned being a bit nervous about her 3-year-old would do for these Colorado Springs fall family photos. But he had so much fun running around and gave me the cutest smiles throughout. Yet another reason I love doing outdoor sessions with kids. If they’re happy, I’m happy—and guaranteed to get some wonderful shots!
