It was such a pleasure to do this Fresh 48 session for a wonderful Colorado Springs family. Although both Fresh 48 and newborn sessions focus on capturing details of your baby shortly after birth, they are very different in style—so much so that you can easily book both and have two completely different (but equally precious!) collections of memories of your little one.
Fresh 48 Session vs. Newborn Photoshoot
So, what’s the difference between these two types of session?
A Fresh 48 session is done within the first 2 days of baby’s life, so it usually takes place in the hospital or birth center. During this session, we’ll focus on the raw, detailed moments that immediately follow birth.
A newborn session, on the other hand, typically takes place sometime within the first 2 weeks after birth. These sessions are held in the family’s home and include more posed, traditional portraiture.
Can Hospital Newborn Photos Really Look Good?
I know, when you compare a hospital room to the cozy comfort of your own home or the polished professionalism of a studio, it seems like it doesn’t quite measure up. But it’s actually amazing how pretty hospital photos can turn out to be!
A Fresh 48 session is meant to capture those raw, real memories of welcoming your baby into the world. So instead of worrying about trying to avoid hospital equipment in the background, I just hone in on your sweet baby and the love between parents and little one. That way, the hospital room is just the setting—something to help bring back memories—while that precious new life is the focus.
Charlotte’s Fresh 48 Session
All of the images from this Fresh 48 session in Colorado Springs were taken relatively close to the window. Although the windows in this room were small and there wasn’t a lot of sunlight that day, the photos turned out so well. Just trust the process! Even if the room feels dark, a window or two usually provides all the light we need.
This sweet baby girl was born a few weeks early, so she was extra tiny and sweet! For Fresh 48 sessions I will usually do some photos where baby is wearing an outfit of your choice, and then some photos in a simple swaddle. I have some of my own swaddles, hats, and bows that I will bring along. Sometimes parents request that their baby just wear a diaper to show more skin details, so that is also an option!
