Melkus Family – Woodland Park Family Photos

This amazing family session was one of my favorites during the entire year of 2020. Woodland Park offers a gorgeous backdrop for family photos, and I know of the perfect unmarked location to get these Pikes Peak views. In the summer, everything is light green and contrasts beautifully against the blue mountains. There is a mix of pine trees and Aspens which is also beautiful in the fall and winter! I recommend wearing neutral clothing for all of my sessions, but especially for family photos in Woodland Park, to not clash with the breathtaking scenery here. The best time to schedule a session at this location is within one hour of sunset (7-8 pm in the summer, and 4-5 pm in the winter). I’ve had plenty of experience shooting at this location, and I love catching that golden glow, but also love the lighting right after the sun goes down for a more muted look with clear mountains. The golden hour is essential!

The Melkus family was an absolute joy to work with. Their 3-month-old son had a totally calm and content experience, and I love that they brought along their dog, Denver, who had a blast romping around the mountain fields. Yes, pets are ALWAYS welcome if the location allows for it! Although Woodland Park is about an hour from Colorado Springs, it’s totally worth the drive. The only reason we wouldn’t be able to use this spot for family photos, is if Rampart Range Road closes for a winter storm. Otherwise, if you have a car that works for mountain country roads, you’re good to go. If you are envisioning a gorgeous mountain backdrop for your session, reach out to me so we can plan your Woodland Park family photos during any season of the year!
