There aren’t many drawbacks to living in a place as pretty as Colorado Springs—especially as a photographer! But I’ll admit, having such gorgeous scenery in my backyard year-round does have one downside. It makes it tricky for me to answer the question:
“So, what’s the best season for family photos in Colorado Springs?”
Truth be told, there isn’t one “best” season to take pictures of your family. The season that’s right for you depends on many factors, one of which is what feeling you want your images to have.

Spring
Spring is fresh, colorful, and playful. This is a great option for families who are after something a little different from the typical mountain family photography look. (Which is popular for a reason, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you need to switch things up a little.) Spring here is gorgeous, but it does come with some unpredictable weather, so be prepared for anything from sunshine to snow! If you love bright, fresh images, and don’t mind being flexible and planning around Mother Nature, spring is ideal!
Summer
Summer is warm, adventurous, and quintessential Colorado. The lush greenery, mountain landscapes, and wildflowers (depending on location and timing) are a classic and beautiful backdrop to your family photos. The longer evenings also give us a little more flexibility around that amazing golden-hour light. Summer is my recommendation for adventurous families who are all about the great outdoors!
Fall
Fall is golden, cozy, and magical. (If I absolutely had to pick a favorite season for Colorado family photos, this would be it—I just love those warm, rich colors!) We get gorgeous golden aspen tree foliage here in the autumn, and the crisp temperatures mean that cozy sweaters and lots of layers are just the thing for outfits. For families who want to capture that feeling of slowing down and enjoying loved ones before the holiday season arrives, fall is your season. (And if you’re all about pretty foliage, cozy vibes, and pumpkin spice, that helps too!)
Winter
Winter is quiet, cozy, and unique, especially if you’re a native Colorado family! When conditions cooperate it really is the perfect storm: Snow-covered landscapes, evergreen trees and mountain scenery, plus all the cozy layers of boots, hats, and blankets make for such a quiet and intimate atmosphere. Winter sessions are my top choice for families who want something romantic, cozy, and distinctly Colorado rather than the traditional fall family photo aesthetic. (Oh, and did I mention how great they are for Christmas card photos?)
Whether you’re drawn to spring blooms, summer mountains, golden fall foliage, or a snowy winter landscape, Colorado Springs is a beautiful backdrop for family photos in every season. The most important part isn’t choosing the “perfect” season—it’s choosing a season that feels like your family.
