The past couple of years have been very busy with many kinds of photo sessions, but I’ve noticed that extended family photo sessions are becoming more and more popular. Which is great with me, because I’ve grown to love them so much! Today, I thought it would be fun to feature a few of my favorite extended family photo sessions in Colorado Springs and answer some frequently asked questions about them.
When to Do Extended Family Photoshoots
There’s never a bad time to document family memories! Different seasons can bring different backdrops, location options, and considerations due to weather or other factors, but your family’s love for each other doesn’t change—and that’s what we want to capture!
You really don’t need to do a ton of planning. The best time for a family photoshoot is when you’re all planning to be together anyway. I always get excited to capture these memories for families coming together, whether that’s for a family reunion, vacation, the holidays, or any other event.

Is a Full or Petite Session Best?
I usually recommend a full session when doing extended family photos, to ensure we have enough time to photograph all the different groupings.
However, as a Colorado Springs family photographer, I know that families come in all shapes and sizes! I don’t have a limit on the number of family members to book a shoot, so if you have a smaller extended family group and are wondering if a shorter session would work, or you have lots of family members joining and need help narrowing down options, let’s chat!
