Beautiful In-Home Newborn Session in Denver, CO

I loved being the in-home newborn photographer for this lovely couple and their adorable new baby boy! Their home near Castle Rock, Colorado was absolutely gorgeous with so many windows to provide natural light for our newborn photos. The moment I stepped inside I knew I wouldn’t be needing my flash stand for this one!

I always bring lighting equipment when doing in-home lifestyle newborn photography, since not every home has an abundance of natural light and I like to be prepared. But in some instances, such as this one, there’s plenty to work with and no need for special equipment. I loved playing with the soft light from the windows and using the dramatic shadows to create some truly unique images.

Baby boy was not particularly sleepy on the morning of our session—too curious about what was going on! We couldn’t quite get him to settle in some of my go-to positions, but I’m still so happy with the images we created. If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a newborn photographer it’s how to work with whatever baby gives us. Every little one is different and it always goes better when we let them take the lead!

One trick for calming babies is to wrap or swaddle them snugly. I wrapped baby boy up in one of my white fabrics to try to coax him to sleep and he definitely settled in and got more comfortable in the last half of the session—as you can see from the pictures!

I’m glad this little guy drifted off eventually, because one thing I’m trying to include in my newborn sessions this year is some portraits in the Moses basket with my white knit chunky blanket. It’s so cozy and creates such a sweet and comfy look for photos of just baby. I was so happy I got to sneak in a few of those at the end!
